Man in custody in Highland Park home invasion

Two hours after a reported home invasion, by someone possibly armed with a rifle, Highland Park police took a man into custody Thursday morning who fit the description received from the scene.
Deputy Chief David Schwarz said officers caught up with the suspect — described by homeowners as wearing a long-sleeve hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans — at 9:19 a.m. at Half Day and Ridge roads, which is about a mile from the home on the 3000 block of Parkside Drive.
The “long gun” was found nearby, police said.
While the suspect is in custody, police did not provide a name as charges have not been filed. The investigation is ongoing, Schwarz said.
Officers received the 911 call at 7:22 a.m. from the homeowners after the male suspect allegedly broke into the home through a downstairs window, police reported. The suspect fled the home after a resident confronted him, but got away before police arrived.
Schwarz said officers secured the home and set up a perimeter with help from the Lake Forest and Bannockburn police departments. A North Chicago K-9 unit was called to assist with the search and a recorded telephone message was sent to all Highland Park residents notifying them of the incident.
As a result, police said, two people reported seeing the man who matched the description.
