DEERFIELD — After spending more than a decade as a rabbi in New York, Highland Park native Matthew Field has come home — to Deerfield — ready to help others.
He’s now the owner of Right at Home, an in-home care and assistance service that helps senior citizens or those with disabilities hold on to their independence by continuing to live in their homes.
Field said he knew he was searching for a change from the congregation life, but knew he wanted to continue to help people. Having served a congregation of mostly older adults, Field said he saw first-hand, on a daily basis, the struggles they face with day-to-day living.
After much thought, Field moved with his wife and daughters back to the North Shore, to help out those in need.
“I knew I wanted to do something on my own,” Field said. “I also knew I didn’t have the training to dive right into a business of my own.”
So after some researching with a business broker, Field said one industry kept coming in at the top of his list: in-home care.
“Even before I left New York, the same industry was on my mind,” Field said.
Field explained that he was initially inspired to get into care giving after watching an elderly woman in his Rochester, N.Y., congregation care for her husband, who had a severe case of Alzheimer’s disease.
“It was terrible on her,” Field said. “She had no one to help her.”
Now, Field said he is on a mission to recruit some of the best caregivers available to offer in-home care to the caliber he would expect for his own family.
“We’re very picky,” Field said of his hiring process. “My standards are, who would I want to send to my loved ones’ home? You can fill any body in that position, but that’s not the kind of care I want to provide.”
Field said Right at Home offers a variety of in-home assistance services catered to clients’ individual needs.
“We offer companion care, which is for someone who is more physically independent,” Field said. “It could be anyone who simply doesn’t want to be alone in their home all day, to bigger needs, like driving them to their errands.”
Field also said his staff of certified nursing assistants can provide more personal care as well.
“They will do the more hands-on, hygiene care, like bathing, for those who have greater needs,” Field said. “For some, the need is only a couple hours a day, but for others, it’s 24/7 care.”
Field said his Right at Home business has recently been licensed by the Illinois Department of Health, and is now in the process of hiring staff.
