Highland Park police blotter for July 23 - July 30, 2012

The following incidents were listed among the official reports of the Highland Park Police Department. Readers are reminded that an arrest does not constitute a finding of guilt. Only a court of law can make that determination.

ALCOHOL

Mark Vilichiz-Malit, 18, of the 2200 block of Linden Avenue, Waukegan, and Jake Mortensen, 18, of the 2500 block of Sequoit, Waukegan, were given administrative citations alleging underage consumption of alcohol at 11:15 p.m. July 27 at Chatfield Drive and Omaha Street. According to the police report, officers responded to a report from community policing aides who allegedly witnessed several subjects with open containers of alcohol. Vilichiz-Malit and Mortensen are both expected in administrative court Aug. 16 at City Hall, 1707 St. Johns Ave.

BURGLARY

A GPS navigation system, two walkie talkies and a Bluetooth charger were reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle overnight July 28 on the 1800 block of Midland Avenue.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

A brick was thrown through the rear drivers side window of a vehicle between 4 p.m. July 27 and 1:33 a.m. July 28 on the 200 block of St. Johns Avenue.

A rock was thrown through a garage window overnight July 28 on the 200 block of St. Johns Avenue. A vehicle parked inside the garage also was damaged.

Police investigated a report of criminal damage to property July 25 after obscenities were found spray-painted on multiple trees on the 800 block of Marion Avenue.

David Winkelman, 62, of the 400 block of Woodland Road, Highland Park, was cited with criminal damage to property at 8:07 p.m. July 23 after police responded to a complaint that someone cut down vines on a fence on the 400 block of Woodland Road. Winkelman was given a notice to appear in court date Aug. 8 at 301 S. Greenleaf Ave., Park City.

A mailbox door was kicked in between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. July 23 on the 700 block of Judson Avenue.

Police investigated a delayed report of criminal damage to property July 23 in which the gates of the Port Clinton garage were found damaged. According to the police report, it appeared a vehicle was driven through the gates, causing them to bend. The Port Clinton garage is located on the 600 block of Laurel Avenue.

DRUGS

Ulises Silva, 20, of the first block of Louis, Waukegan, was arrested at 11:15 p.m. July 27 at Chatfield Drive and Omaha Street and charged with possession of marijuana and underage consumption of alcohol. According to the police report, officers responded to a report from community policing aides who allegedly witnessed several people with open containers of alcohol. Silva was released on his own recognizance with a court date of Sept. 12 at 301 S. Greenleaf Ave., Park City.

Jeremy Ruthstein, 23, of the 500 block of Clavey Road, Highland Park, was arrested at 11:30 p.m. July 26 on the 1900 block of Beverly Place and charged with possession of marijuana. According to the police report, officers responded to an anonymous report of a suspicious vehicle parked in the area. Ruthstein was released on his own recognizance with a court date of Aug. 22 at 301 S. Greenleaf Ave., Park City.

THEFT

A silver tin jewelry box was found to be missing an undisclosed amount of cash July 29 after moving company workers loaded items into a truck on the 200 block of St. Johns Avenue.

An iPhone was stolen from a purse at the downtown sidewalk sale July 27 on the 500 block of Central Avenue.

Two wallets containing identification and credit cards were taken after a master lock was opened with a bolt cutter between 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. July 25 on the 100 block of Skokie Valley Road.

Julie Glassman, 35, of the 800 block of North Winchester Avenue, Chicago, was arrested at 3:58 p.m. July 24 on the 1800 block of First Street and charged with retail theft after police investigated an alleged theft the previous week. Glassman was released on a cash bond with a court date of Aug. 22 at 301 S. Greenleaf Ave., Park City.

A wallet containing a driver’s license, credit cards, a rebate check, cash and a monthly Metra pass was taken from an unsecured locker between 3:45 and 4:30 p.m. July 23 on the 100 block of Skokie Valley Road.

Two garage windows were damaged between July 21 and 24 on the 2100 block of Magnolia Lane. There were no signs of forced entry.

About 75 feet of copper piping was found ripped from a vacant residence July 26 on the 2300 block of Shady Lane. According to the police report, the residence has been vacant since November 2010.

TRAFFIC

Juan Alvarez, 26, of the 2600 block of Waukegan Avenue, Highland Park, was arrested at 4:10 a.m. July 30 on the 2500 block of Skokie Valley Road and charged with driving on a suspended license. He also was cited for alleged illegal passing on the shoulder. Alvarez was released on his own recognizance with a court date of Aug. 22 at 301 S. Greenleaf Ave., Park City.

Edward McPherson, 18, of the 1500 block of Lorelei Drive, Zion, was arrested at 1:49 a.m. July 27 on the 1900 block of Skokie Valley Road and charged with driving on a suspended license. He also was cited for allegedly speeding. McPherson was released on his own recognizance with a court date of Aug. 22 at 301 S. Greenleaf Ave., Park City.

DUI

Nelson Steele, 28, of the 14400 block of West Sheryl Lynn Drive, Wadsworth, was arrested at 3:05 a.m. July 27 on the 1900 block of Skokie Valley Road and charged with driving under the influence. He also was cited for alleged illegal lane use and driving an uninsured vehicle. Steele was released on a cash bond with a court date of Aug. 24 at 18 N. County St., Waukegan.

Arthur Rowels Jr., 35, of the 1200 block of West 97th Street, Chicago, was arrested at 3:31 a.m. July 25 on the 2600 block of Skokie Valley Road and charged with driving under the influence. He also was cited for allegedly speeding and driving on a suspended license. He was released on his own recognizance with a court date of Aug. 10 at 18 N. County St., Waukegan.
