HIGHLAND PARK

Police plan to step up safety enforcement in the downtown business district in advance of the weekend festivals that start Friday, Aug. 24.

The traffic safety initiative targeting both motorists and cyclists will run from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 22-23. Taste of Highland Park and the Port Clinton Art Festival begin Friday and run through Sunday, Aug. 26.

Police will be looking for motorists who, among other violations, make illegal U-turns, turn left across traffic to enter a parking space, fail to come to a complete stop or use wireless phones or electronic devices when driving.

Bicycle enforcement will include disobeyance of stop signs or traffic signals and riding more than two abreast.

The high volume of pedestrian and bicycle traffic in the downtown district increases the need for close attention to traffic laws, police say. Motorists should always give parents with small children, the elderly and disabled consideration when crossing the street, they note.~.
