HIGHLAND PARK — Just about any occasion worthy of a greeting card can also be acknowledged with a gift basket of chocolates and confections, the website for Goodies Etc in Highland Park suggests in a low-key and ever-so-tasteful way.
Of course, birthdays, anniversaries, Easter and Valentine’s Day are worth celebrating with a bit of decadence. But gift baskets also convey “Dad, you’re the greatest” or “just thinking of you” or congratulations on the arrival of your twins.
Still, there’s nothing like the month of December — the season synonymous with gift giving — to kick the pace of business into high gear at Goodies Etc, a fixture at 652 Central Avenue since 1989. Co-owner Louise Lapping has barely been able to come up for air this season, working six and seven days a week.
“Just today, we sent packages to the West Indies, Canada and London,” said Lapping, a 1960 graduate of Highland Park High School who owns the business with Lois Morrison and Lisa Meitus, also of Highland Park. The shop has built a loyal clientele of individual and corporate customers over the past 23 years.
The most popular seller remains the Signature Assortment, a mix of chocolate-covered pretzels, English toffee, Oreo bark, turtles, chocolate cherries, chocolate-dipped apricots and other items. The assortment comes in five sizes ranging from $50 to $150.
Gift givers who prefer a “no-brainer” shopping experience can select one of the standard assortments, while shoppers who prefer to customize their selections can put together their own mix, from mini turtles and almond bark to Gummy Bears.
