Candidates file for Highland Park school boards

School-minded voters who reside within the boundaries of Township High School District 113 may have good reason to vote in April, when the ballot likely will include both a bond issue for facility improvements and a contested race for the school board.
As of Tuesday, five candidates had filed for three open seats on the high school board, including two candidates who made unsuccessful runs in 2011.
David Greenberg of Highland Park and Mark Mulert of Deerfield were among the five candidates to file the paperwork to secure a spot on the April 9 ballot. The other candidates were incumbent Annette Lidawer of Highland Park; Julie Gordon, Highland Park; and Stacey Meyer, Deerfield.
Candidates have until 5 p.m. Dec. 26 to file their nominating petitions and other documents.
Of three District 113 incumbents whose terms expire in April, only Lidawer is seeking reelection. Four-term board veteran Harvey Cohen is stepping down after 16 years on the school board. Bonnie Schlensky also is not seeking reelection.
In 2011, Greenberg was an outspoken opponent of the district’s unsuccessful referendum asking voters to authorize $133 million in borrowing for facility improvements.
The District 113 School Board caucus on Nov. 28 endorsed Gordon, Meyer and Mulert, while bypassing Lidawer, the incumbent. The caucus did not interview Greenberg, saying his application arrived after the deadline.
The District 113 School Board is still deliberating the scope of the facility improvements to include in a second referendum attempt in April.
In North Shore District 112, five candidates have filed to date for four seats. First-term incumbents Howard Metz and Jane Solmor-Mordini, both of Highland Park, plan to seek reelection. Two other incumbents, Marcia Bogolub and Cynthia Plouche, have indicated they plan to step down when their terms expire in May.
The challengers who have filed so far include Paul Helwing Tatelli of Highland Park, who is making a second run for the board; Karla Livney, Highland Park; and Samantha Stolberg, Highland Park.
