Highland Park police arrested a 25-year-old Bartlett man after an Internet investigation aimed at perpetrators who arrange sexual encounters with juveniles.
According to police, Robert Konieczko, of the 700 block of Bayberry Drive, Bartlett, showed up at Central Park in Highland Park on July 31 for what he believed would be a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl. Police said he had previously communicated with an investigator he believed to be the 14-year-old. He allegedly drove to Highland Park to meet the girl the morning of July 31, police said.
At about 10:30 a.m., police approached Konieczko in his black Nissan Altima at the park. A search of his vehicle, along with statements made at the time of his arrest, linked him to the Internet communications and resulted in the arrest, police said.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s office approved charges of indecent solicitation of a child, a Class 2 felony, and solicitation to meet a child, a Class 4 felony. Konieczko’s bond has been set at $50,000. He was scheduled for a court appearance Monday, Aug. 5.
“This arrest is a grim reminder that this type of criminal activity has no geographic boundaries and can enter your home through electronic communications such as the Internet,” said Highland Park police chief Paul Shafer. “Parents are encouraged to actively monitor their children’s use to ensure their safety.”
