Trax Tavern and Grill in Deerfield has brand-new, healthier menu items. Robert Cohn, general manager of the restaurant, said that he began looking at healthier choices after talking to customers. “We are very customer-oriented,” Cohn said. “I talked to the parents about it, and they said they would rather have their kids have a smoothie than a soda to drink. So we added a smoothie machine.” Smoothies, in a variety of fruit flavors like strawberry and banana, sell for $3.99. Pendants, rings, necklaces and pieces made of combined gold and silver adorn the display cases of Olsky Jewelers in downtown Glencoe. Watches line one part of the wall in the small shop, which has been in the same location for 57 years and is the North Shore’s oldest jewelry store. Howard Bernstein, owner of Olsky Jewelers, said business at the shop is typically a mix of sales and repairs. Highland Park resident Bonnie Hillman Shay’s career as a personal organizer may have started unwittingly, when she was 6 years old. As a child growing up near Lincoln Elementary School, Shay recalled enjoying her weekends reorganizing her mom’s kitchen pantry, closets and drawers. “I’d empty everything out and put things back in place nice and neat,” Shay said. “I just liked to make order out of chaos.” Shay’s organization wiring stayed strong through school, volunteering and her career. Report: Illinois teen employment at lowest rate

Teen employment has continued to plummet in Illinois, according to a new report from Northeastern University. The rate dived to 27.5 percent in 2011, the lowest teen employment rate in the 42 years for which data is available. It is down from just under 50 percent in 1999-2000 and from 36 percent in 2007.
