Deerfield High School club broadcasts sports on Web

The Deerfield Sports Information Club, a program started in October, is a unique sports Web broadcasting initiative at the high school that broadcasts live sports events and uses students as statisticians and play-by-play announcers.

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to bar members of Congress and their staff from using inside legislative information in personal stock trading. Members empowered presidents to veto discretionary-spending items providing that both houses of Congress then vote to approve of the rescissions. Members also required new rules for figuring the budgetary impact of federal loan programs. Senators, meanwhile, approved a federal aviation budget, and they advanced a bill to authorize federal road, bridge, transit and highway-safety programs through Sept. 30, 2013.

Snow, warmer temperatures expected this week

The bitter cold temperatures that hit the Chicago area over the weekend are expected to give way to snow Monday and then milder weather by the end of the week. Temperatures are expected to climb to 35 degrees on Monday, when there is an 80 percent chance of snow after 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service’s website. About two inches of accumulation is possible by Tuesday morning. Dorothy met Captain Hook in an original tale created by the children in the creative drama program of Special Gifts Theater. In four months, children age 7 to 9 with special needs, learned how to create characters, write lines, sing and act on stage in the creative drama class. The result was “The Wizard of Neverland,” performed by eight children with special needs and their eight peer buddies, in the auditorium at Crow Island School Saturday morning. Doctors on Tuesday reattached a 4-inch by 8-inch piece of U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk’s skull that was removed to ease swelling in his brain following his Jan. 21 stroke. “The swelling in Senator Kirk’s brain has subsided and this morning we were able to reattach the portion of his skull that had been removed following his stroke,” said Dr. Richard Fessler, neurosurgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and professor of neurological surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “This is an important milestone in his recovery and a step toward the next phase, rehabilitation. More than 200 high school students from communities throughout the North Shore on Saturday partied the night away at Deerfield High School’s first Valentine’s Day Buddy Dance. It’s winter orchestra concert season across North Shore School District 112 as four Highland Park schools showcased their musical talents last week and more concerts were scheduled this week. The Lincoln and Ravinia Elementary fourth- and fifth-grade orchestras came together for a concert at Ravinia Feb. 1. Highland Park High School’s annual Charity Drive is now in full swing, as students already have packed several fund-raising events into the first week of the month-long effort. Mark Kirk’s condition has been upgraded from “fair” to “good.” Doctors hope to be able to re-attach the 8-inch-by-4-inch section of his skull that had to be removed after he suffered a stroke two weeks ago. Then the Highland Park Republican can begin physical therapy. “Sen.
