Saying that it’s a “good fit,” Deerfield standout Jason Kayne has made a commitment to play soccer at Tufts University in Boston. Kayne, who helped the Warriors to an 18-6-1 record and a sectional final berth, is one of the area’s most heralded players. A first-team selection on the Pioneer Press All-Lake Shore team, the central midfielder was named an ESPN Rise All-State player. Koehler also coaches girls gymnastics at Highland Park High School, meaning she must be the only one in Illinois — if not the world — who could talk “truck and trailer” (accidental obstruction, in rugby) one minute and Tsuk (vaults, in gymnastics) the next. GIRLS SOCCER — Three players from the Eclipse Select Soccer Club, including Highland Park’s Zoe Redei and Lake Forest’s Ginny McGowan, have been called up to the U.S. U-15 National Team for a February camp. Kayla McCoy of Lincolnwood also got the nod. Redei will join the 97s/98s pool as a forward. McGowan, a defender, has been added to the 95s/96s pool. They will be part of a 48-player camp, which runs from Feb. 11-18 at Sunrise, Fla. Highland Park’s boys basketball team got back on track on Tuesday. Led by Jake Norcia’s 17 points, the Giants defeated visiting Lake Forest Academy 54-51. The Giants (13-9, 4-4) received 12 points from Danny Dlugie, while Ross Chukerman finished with nine points and 14 rebounds. Josh Sterns scored five points to go along with seven assists. Being named to the Metro North All-Star team is one thing. Being selected as one of the game MVPs is an even better thing. Highland Park hockey player Michael Gordon earned that honor following Sunday’s all-star game at Northbrook Sports Center. The senior, a goalie, stood out for the Blue Team, which also featured fellow Giants Zach Kalter, Noah Pickus, Alec Shapiro, Alex Block, Jordan Fox and Zach Putlak. Phase 1 is complete. Carmel Catholic’s gymnastics team opened the postseason in impressive fashion on Thursday night, when the Corsairs put up a 153.225 score at the Deerfield Regional. Phase 2 will be on Feb. 9, when the team contends for a sectional championship at Niles North. Phase 3 will be the upcoming State Finals.
