For the first six innings, Glenbrook South and Highland Park’s regional semifinal game at Warren High School took on the personality of playoff baseball. When former Deerfield High School tennis star Mike Morrison won four state singles championships from 1983-86, his father Chuck Morrison doubled as his coach. After losing twice during the regular season to Central Suburban North archrival Highland Park, Deerfield picked the right time to notch its first triumph over the Giants in boys volleyball. The Warriors won in two sets, 25-19, 25-19 in the Waukegan Regional Semifinals Tuesday night. Deerfield will face Barrington in Wednesday’s regional championship game (7 p.m.). For years, stationary bikes have helped Highland Park High School’s boys tennis players move forward in tournament draws. The bikes rest at the school. “In the school’s dungeon,” said Giants coach Steve Rudman. Freshman Casey Frommer started the season at catcher, then moved to first base and now she’s at shortstop. Highland Park head softball coach Lydia Gonzalez has a simple explanation. “She can play any position,” Gonzalez said. “Casey has a very strong glove. She is going to play where the ball is going the most.” That spot now is shortstop, where according to Gonzalez, Casey uses her agility to get to the ball and her strong arm to make play after play. Two of the top guards in the Pioneer Press Lake Shore area will be teaming up next season. Highland Park head basketball coach Paul Harris has confirmed that all-conference guard Jake Norcia will play his college basketball at Augustana. Norcia, who averaged a team-best 14.5 points per game, will be joined in the backcourt by Libertyville’s Griffin Pils (16.6). Both players came up with impressive senior seasons.
