Phase 1 is complete.

Carmel Catholic’s gymnastics team opened the postseason in impressive fashion on Thursday night, when the Corsairs put up a 153.225 score at the Deerfield Regional.

Phase 2 will be on Feb. 9, when the team contends for a sectional championship at Niles North.

Phase 3 will be the upcoming State Finals. The Corsairs will be looking to win back-to-back-to-back crowns at Palatine on Feb. 17-18.

Carmel was a runaway winner at Thursday’s regional. The host Warriors scored a 134.275 to take runner-up honors, while Vernon Hills was third (129.275). Maine West (120.025) and Highland Park (110.875) also competed.

The Corsairs went 1-2-3 in the all-around with Lauren Feely (38.6), Kristin Mirski (38.425) and Jen Zeller (38.125).

Feely also claimed first on vault (9.8) and balance beam (9.6), while she was second on uneven bars (9.525) and third on floor exercise (9.675).

Mirski’s championship came on floor (9.8). She also was second on vault (9.7), while she placed third on bars (9.475) and beam (9.450).

Zeller captured top honors on bars (9.625). She added a second on floor (9.7) and came in fifth on vault (9.45) and beam (9.35).

Sarah Cohen-Smith helped the Carmel cause by placing second on beam (9.5) and fourth on vault (9.625).

And, Anna Brandmeier chipped in with a tie for fourth on floor (9.525) and fifth on bars (9.425).

Meanwhile, Vernon Hills’ Alli Tran also turned in a fine showing. She was fourth in the all-around with a highly respectable score (38.025).

Tran, who was the all-around champ at last week’s NSC Meet, scored a 9.65 on vault (3rd place). She placed fourth on three events: bars (9.45), beam (9.4) and floor (9.525).

Deerfield’s Christine Stitcher was the meet’s fifth best all-arounder. She automatically qualified to the sectional with her 36.60 score.
